Open My Eyes, That I May See

Here’s a great hymn to sing before Bible study.

To all my listeners out there, have a Blessed Chinese New Year.

There’s also a useful website for pianists that I discovered today –

Lyrics and Music: Clara H. Scott

Open my eyes, that I may see
Glimpses of truth Thou hast for me;
Place in my hands the wonderful key
That shall unclasp and set me free.

Silently now I wait for Thee,
Ready my God, Thy will to see,
Open my eyes, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

Open my ears, that I may hear
Voices of truth Thou sendest clear;
And while the wave notes fall on my ear,
Everything false will disappear.

Open my mouth, and let me bear,
Gladly the warm truth everywhere;
Open my heart and let me prepare
Love with Thy children thus to share.

    I have not heard this song for a long time. I have two hymn books. When I looked this song up in the old hymn book the words are different for the 2nd and 3rd verses. However, in my 1997 hymn book, it shows the same as you have listed. Can you tell me why?

    The old hymn book is the Living Hymns copyright 1972, 1975 by Alfred B. Smith. For the words it shows Clara H Scott (altered) – What does altered mean – that she rewritten the words???

    2nd verse – Open my mind that I may read, more of thy love in word and deed, what shall I fear while yet Thou dost lead? Only for light from Thee I plead.

    3rd verse – Open my way that I may bring, trophies of grace to Christ, my King, echoed in love Thy word shall out ring, sweet as the note that angels sing.

    There must be a revision to the words. It would be interesting to know the story behind this song. It could be like the hymn Keep on Believing where there was more then one person writing the song.

    Elisha Albright Hoffman is shown credit as the publisher in 1895 and the words are the same as listed above, so why did Alfred Smith use a altered version of the song?

    I have most of the piano plays here in our church’s hymnal sunday.

    Can i request to have the piano mp3 title “Our Best” by S.C Kirk (20th century), Grant C.Tuffar 1869-1950.

    God bless your ministry.
